Learn why so many designers are turning to decorative plaster for luxury spa-like bathrooms

Tadelakt - Vale Venetian

Seamless Bathrooms Continue To Grow In Popularity

Bathrooms are an area where decorative plaster is becoming increasingly popular.

More homeowners are moving away from heavily tiled bathrooms and opting for seamless finishes that create a calmer, spa-like atmosphere. Tadelakt is the most popular product used in bathrooms, showers and wetrooms but there are many more that can be used

Here we see the most stunning Stucco Italiano Tadelakt bathroom installation from Vale Venetian a talented installer from South Wales

Which Products to Use

Products such as Tadelakt, Hydrocement, Scagliola and waterproofed lime-based plasters are helping applicators create:

  • Seamless shower walls
  • Wet rooms
  • Contemporary bathroom finishes
  • Minimalist bathroom interiors

This Scagliola bathroom is quite unique. The ancient skill of using Scagliola to replicate marble has been revived by Stucco Italiano by the creation of a commercial Scagliola mix unique to the brand. This installation is by Zeljko Babic from Serbia, a “maestro” installer who is the main instructor at Stucco Italiano classes.

The Benefits of Plaster Finishes

These finishes soften the look of a bathroom while still offering durability and water resistance when applied correctly.

The result is a much more luxurious and architectural feel compared to standard bathroom finishes.

This bathroom has been carried out by our talented colleagues and co-distributors Stucco Italiano Sweden and Michael Sarian the owner is exceptionally talented in traditional Tadelakt and Pastellone finishes. Featured here is Pastellone – a natural microment that is a joy to work with.

The difference between Pastellone and other lime based plasters is that the final sealant is always a varnish in a bathroom whereas the other plasters there are other options for the final finish. Something to point out at this juncture is that varnish takes less maintenance, some other finishes do take a little maintenance however we have a maintenance kit that will help you take care of this. This is often a small price to pay for such a beautiful environment.

What Not to Use

As we move to market seamless bathroom finishes more in the UK we have seen quite an uptake recently in the use of classic Marmorino plasters in bathrooms, like this stunning bathroom featured, carried out by Elson Venetian Design or the one below created by KK Vision
While Marmorino Carrara Medium and Coarse are fantastic in wet areas and can be waterproofed well, the very high shine Marmorino Veneziano Classic Fine and Stucco Grassello should not be used in shower areas. These products have a higher level of cellulose in them. The cellulose used is made from tree fibres and this natural material, however because it is a plant based material it can mould.
Almost all other lime plaster materials can be used somewhere in the bathroom with lots being successful in shower areas, the only thing to consider is how to water-proof, whether with Hydrophobic water resisting products or with a varnish.
Finally avoid textures in the shower as they will allow body fats to collect in the pits and this in turn encourages mould.
